Depression
What is depression?
Depression, also called major depressive disorder, is a mood disorder that causes persistent negative feelings like sadness, guilt, and hopelessness. These feelings affect you without a particular reason and can impact your thoughts and behaviors.
While not quite the same, depression is similar to grief. However, grief is the sadness you feel after the loss of a loved one or another very sad event and usually doesn’t include the loss of self-esteem that often comes with depression.
Embracing Uncertainty Therapy and Wellness offers mental health assessments to diagnose depression. Your provider uses the results of your assessment to develop a treatment plan so you can manage your symptoms.
What are the symptoms of depression?
Depression is more than just sadness or a low mood and can come with a wide array of symptoms depending on your age and circumstances. Many people with depression experience a sense of hopelessness for the future and a lack of drive or motivation to engage in activities they usually enjoy.
If you have depression, you might also experience: tearfulness and crying, anger and irritability, fatigue, trouble concentrating or remembering things, guilt, insomnia, sleeping too much or aches and pains.
Many people with depression often have other mental health diagnoses. If you have an anxiety disorder, eating disorder, or other co-occurring condition along with depression, Embracing Uncertainty Therapy and Wellness treats them together.
How can I manage my depression?
Managing depression may require several strategies, including counseling or therapy at Embracing Uncertainty Therapy and Wellness. Individual counseling with techniques, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can help you cope with feelings of depression and learn to recognize the thought patterns involved in your condition. You might also benefit from family therapy if your depression or the depression of a loved one affects your whole family.
In addition to counseling, Embracing Uncertainty Therapy and Wellness offers functional medicine, such as nutrition and lifestyle changes, to help promote a healthier mindset. By adopting regular physical activity, plenty of sleep, and a balanced diet, you can improve symptoms of depression. If you have depression and would like to learn more about the treatments and services that can help, call Embracing Uncertainty Therapy and Wellness or schedule an appointment online today.
